Access to Higher Education Diploma (Medicine and Health Professions)

Access to Medicine is a thorough course designed to prepare you for entry into Higher Education routes for medicine and allied professions e.g. pharmacy. The Access to Medicine course is designed for adults who, for one reason or another, have not had the opportunity to study towards a degree or diploma or have achieved in other areas and now wish to retrain as doctors or in the allied health professions. It is for those people who can demonstrate significant life experiences. It may also be suitable for people who have previously taken a degree in a non-science subject and now want to retrain. This course enables the learner to obtain an Access to HE Diploma, which is a credit based, graded qualification. Access Diplomas are a nationally accepted alternative to A Levels for entry to higher education and are recognised by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) for higher education. COURSE CONTENT The programme of study will be in the areas of: 1. Chemistry (Atomic Structure and Bonding; Atoms, Molecules and Stoichiometry; Chemical Bonding; Periodic Table; Hydrocarbons; Energetics; Chemical Equilibria; Carbon Chemistry; Acid Base Equilibria); 2. Health studies (Development of Healthcare services); 3. Biology (Infection and Immunity; Human disease and prevention; Nutrition and Digestion; Control Systems and Reproduction; Investigative Process, Principles and Practice); 4. Physics (Biomechanics and Kinetics); 5. Personal and Interpersonal Skills and Psychology (Examination and Revision Skills; Speaking and Listening; Progression into HE); 6. Psychology (The social psychology of health and illness); 7. Project work (independent research on health and disease); 8. Maths (Algebra; Graphical Methods; Using Statistics).
