Biology is at the cutting edge of modern science. Progress in areas as diverse as Human Fertility, Genetics, Medicine and the Environment has pushed this subject into the media spotlight time and time again. An understanding of Biology is an essential part of a 21st Century Education. Students of A-level Biology will need a good understanding of general science, and can expect to learn much more about recent developments in many areas. Also, students learn about more fundamental questions such as how we humans work and where we come from. CONT E N T Biology is split into six modules; the Year 12 modules can be summarised as: Module 1: Development of practical skills – this module underpins the whole of the specification, and covers the practical skills that students should develop throughout the course. The practical skills in this module can be assessed within written examinations and (for A-level only) within the Practical Endorsement. Module 2: Foundations in Biology – covering concepts required throughout the remaining modules – Cell Biology and Biological Molecules. Modules 3 and 4: Breathing and Circulation, Transport, Biodiversity, Evolution and Disease. In Year 13, the course adds further depth with 2 additional modules. Modules 5 and 6: Hormones, Nerves, Behaviour, Respiration, Photosynthesis, Genetics, Biotechnology and Ecology.
