During the course you will learn the following: - Art history and theory - through research and gallery visits- - Drawing development- - Exploring materials and techniques i.e. printmaking- painting- sculpture- - Photography/Digital Imaging- - Presentation skills- - Generating and developing ideas in art and design- - Exploring moving image. You will produce project work in the first year that covers all these areas- with additional sessions studying observational and figure drawing and art & design history. The second year goes into more depth in all of the briefs you are assigned- but you will have more freedom to specialise in the area you wish to progress into through Pathway and Final Major Projects

At the start of the course- trips to galleries take place on a weekly basis- there will be some payment required to cover the costs of these trips. As the course progresses these become less frequent as students are expected to visit galleries independently. Included in these- there is normally the opportunity to take part on a trip overseas which is usually within mainland Europe. Students are expected to purchase a starter kit of essential materials- sketchbooks and a portfolio at the start of the course. Throughout the course you will need to pay for paper- sketchbooks- and photographic film / paper as well as replacement materials for your kit. Having your own digital camera is not essential but would be advantageous. Good levels of English and Maths are important for your success in your course- your chosen vocation and life. Throughout your course you will continue to develop your English and Maths skills in your vocational classes. If you haven't achieved an A*-C grade in English or Maths at GCSE- or a Level 2 Functional Skill- you will also be working towards a qualification in English or Maths at a level that will enable you to progress towards these grades.
