Technical Baccalaureate - Level 3 (OCR)

UPDATED 20161220 11:57:23

The government announced an alternative to the traditional A-level in April 2014. A new vocational performance measure called the Technical Baccalaureate, the 'Tech Bacc', will mark achievement by young people aged 16 to 19 and will ensure they have the technical ability that employers want. The qualification is being offered to our level 3 learners on Extended Diplomas in Advanced Engineering programmes in Aeronautical, Manufacturing and Electrical & Electronic Engineering who have A*- A GCSE grades in Mathematics. The Tech. Bacc will involve a demonstration of achievement in AS maths, literacy and a high-quality vocational course. The programme of study will also require an extended project that will aim to test students' skills in extended writing, communication, research, self-discipline and self-motivation. Skills Minister Matthew Hancock (in April 2014) said that young people who achieved the Tech Bacc would, "have a set of qualifications that stood them in good stead to get good jobs, take apprenticeships, or go on to further study, including technical courses and degrees at university." Commenting on the announcement, Neil Carberry, CBI Director for Employment and Skills, welcomed the proposals for the new performance measure and said that is was a "big step in the right direction". "Including the Tech Bacc in existing league tables will help put vocational subjects on a par with academic A-levels," he said. "Business prefers this approach, rather than creating another new qualification which would struggle for recognition - like the Diploma did. We hope this will prove to be a staging point towards our ultimate goal of rigorous vocational A-levels."
