Textiles - Cross Stitch Cards and Keepsakes

This course will introduce you to the art of cross stitching. You will learn about materials and techniques and will aim to produce one (or a number of items) using cross stitched motifs as decoration. You will look at a variety of work and designs by leading cross-stitch craftspeople as well as some much older samplers stitched over the last 200-300 years and will use these sources as inspiration for original designs. You will learn how to make up your own cross stitch chart and will be guided in stitching it onto even weave fabric., By the end of this course you should be able to, Describe and explain the technique of cross stitch work, Generate an original cross stitch chart, Design and plan a cross stitch project, Produce a complete piece of cross stitch work, Any students interested in being creative and produce work they can share with their friends.

Entry requirements

For the first session, you will need squared paper and coloured pencils. You will also need: a piece of even weave fabric for each project and embroidery hoop or frame to fit; a selection of stranded cotton threads and cross stitch needles (your tutor will advise you during the first session). A basic sewing kit will be useful throughout the course. Please do not buy any materials until you know the course is running.
