We will examine the underlying assumption of the Pre-Raphaelites that, 'Art has the power to reform society and make people good'. The course will reveal their commitment to realism in detail and authenticity in the presentation of subject matter, their religious ideas and their connection with the Oxford Movement, and their exploration of medieval and chivalric themes. Beginning with the members of the 'Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood', we will look at the individual artists and chart how their work changed over time, placing them in the broader social, political, religious and artistic context.
