The course builds on the knowledge gained from GCSE. Topics such as electricity, forces, electromagnetic waves, space and nuclear physics will all be familiar to the students. Topics are studied to a greater depth and there is a clear emphasis on skills, understanding and application of knowledge as opposed to simple recall. Students are challenged to look critically at possible models to explain observations. With an emphasis on practical work and problem solving, the course is modern and enjoyable with direct relevance to the world today. The study of physics in medicine is always a popular part of the course. All students wishing to take A level Physics must have achieved at least a B grade in Physics if they have studied Triple Science or two B grades if they have studied Double Science. They must also have achieved a minimum of a grade 6 in GCSE Mathematics and be taking A level Mathematics as an option as good mathematical ability is an important requirement for success in physics.
