The course provides students with an overview of all aspects of Biology with particular emphasis on the biochemistry and physiology of living organisms.
Name: Biology AS/A Level (AQA) Qualification title: Biology AS/A Level (AQA) Qualification type: GCE A/AS Level or equivalent Assessment AS Biology Unit 1 Biology and Disease (100 UMS marks) Students study the structure of cells and cell membranes, the digestive, respiratory and circulatory systems and the effect of diseases on these systems. Students sit a 1 hour 15 minute exam paper in May. Unit 2 Variety of living Organisms (140 UMS marks) Students study the variety of living organisms and examine the contribution of genetics, reproduction and the environment to evolution and biodiversity. Students are required to sit a 1 hour 45 minute exam paper in May. Unit 3 Practical Skills (60 UMS marks) Practical skills are assessed internally in two practical assignments throughout the year. A2 Biology Unit 4 Populations and the Environment (100 UMS marks) Students learn how to sample living organisms in their environment and focus on the flow of energy through ecosystems with particular emphasis on the processes of photosynthesis and respiration. This module is assessed in January or June in a 1 hour and 30 minute exam. Unit 5 Control in Cells and Organisms (140 UMS marks) Students study the nervous and hormonal systems and examine how genes regulate the synthesis of proteins required by these systems. The role of gene technology in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases is also investigated. This module is assessed in June in a 2 hour and 15 minutes exam. Unit 6 Practical Skills (60 UMS marks) Practical skills are assessed throughout the A2 course and marks are attained through two practical skills exams carried out internally.
