Most place names in Kent and the Weald originated in the early Anglo-Saxon period. On this course you will learn how place names were formed from Anglo-Saxon words and names, what they mean literally, and what they tell us about the history and landscape of the area and the lives of the people who lived here. We will also study the meanings and derivations of earlier (Roman and pre-Roman) and later place names. Students will be able to assess their learning from their notes and handouts, also through discussion, question and answer and tutor feedback. Suitable for all general interest students. No prior knowledge is required.
