The Course and Assessment Pattern Studying Physics at a higher level aims to encourage learners to: • develop essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of the subject and how they relate to each other • develop and demonstrate a deep appreciation of the skills, knowledge and understanding of scientific methods • develop competence and confidence in a variety of practical, mathematical and problem solving skills • develop their interest in and enthusiasm for the subject, including developing an interest in further study and careers associated with the subject • understand how society makes decisions about scientific issues and how the sciences contribute to the success of the economy and society. A Level Assessment: There will be one examination series available each year in June. Paper 1 (2hours 15minutes) will assess any content in Modules 1, 2, 3 and 5 and will be worth 100 marks which equates to 37% of the A level qualification. Paper 2 (2hours 15minutes) will assess any content in Modules 1, 2, 4 and 6 and will be worth 100 marks which equates to 37% of the A level qualification. Paper 3 (1hour 30minutes) will assess any content in Modules 1 to 6 and will be worth 70 marks which equates to 26% of the A level qualification. A minimum of 12 practical activities to demonstrate practical competence. This will be reported separately from the A level grade. AS Assessment: There will be one examination series available each year in June. Paper 1 will assess Modules 1 to 4 and will be worth 70 marks which equates to 50% of the AS qualification. Paper 2 will assess Modules 1 to 4 and will be worth 70 marks which equates to 50% of the AS qualification.
