AS Sociology provides an introduction to the study of society and of people and their behaviour. Students explore theories / explanation of patterns we find in society e.g. "Why are there differences in girls and boys achievement levels in school. The course allows students the opportunity of developing essential knowledge and understanding of sociological thought and methods, applying a range of skills including discussion and debating. The AQA specification allows pupils to develop knowledge of contemporary social processes and social changes. Students will be encouraged to develop their own social awareness through active engagement with the contemporary social world. Subject content areas in year 1 include: Unit 1 - Education and Research Methods Unit 2 – Family and Households. In year 2 candidates will continue to focus on contemporary society but they should demonstrate a wider range of in depth knowledge and understanding and use highly developed skills of application, analysis, interpretation and evaluation. Subject content areas include: Unit 3 Media/ Beliefs In Society, Unit 4 – Crime and Deviance with Theory and Methods
