Elizabeth Gaskell was a novelist and short story writer during the Victorian era. Her novels offer a detailed portrait of the lives of many strata of society, and are of interest to social historians as well as lovers of literature. Arnold Bennett was born two years after Gaskell's death, yet his style is traditional rather than modern and he shares Gaskell's interest in social concerns. This course considers five texts by these two authors and aims to locate their work in terms of their social, geographical, historical and literary contexts.
