Unit 1: Influences on Music - 30% - Written paper 1 hr45 minutes based on: - Structured listening questions using a CD of musical excerpts. - Two essay questions one on each Area of Study (Beethoven Symphony no 1 and Musical Theatre 1940-80). Unit 2: Composition Techniques - 30% Students develop their composing skills, culminating in a set Examination task (3-5 minutes) in controlled and timed conditions (20hrs). Unit 3: Performing - 40% Two performances, 10-16 minutes total: - Solo Performance Ensemble performance or, - Solo Performance on second instrument/voice. Students will be required to: -Individually practise daily for a minimum of 30 minutes and participate in a range of school based and external ensembles including singing. - Show an interest in and commitment to the process of composing, investing time and effort both in school, during study periods and at home. - Produce high quality written work in analysing scores, reading musical notation, understanding of music theory, identifying important musical features, social and historical context, recognising and applying harmonic and tonal techniques (3-4 hours written homework per week). - Access to a laptop with Sibelius software is recommended.
