AS Unit 1: Physical & Human Geography All candidates must study the 2 core components: Rivers, flood and management and Population Change. In addition, two optional units will be studied; Coastal environments and Energy issues. The unit investigates traditional elements of Geography such as changing processes and landforms however these are then blended with newer, innovative concepts and challenges such as those of achieving a sustainable society. Assessment of unit 1: Students will be assessed by structures short and extended questions based upon the core components and optional elements in a 2hr examination. AS Unit 2: Geographical skills Candidates will develop the use and application of Geographical skills, mostly by participating in a residential field trip at the start of AS but also ongoing through learning the components of unit 1. Skills addressed cover all elements of investigation such as identifying questions and issues, methods of data collection and data processing and evaluation techniques. In addition cartographic, graphic, ICT and Statistical skills will be addressed. Assessment of unit 2: In a 1hr exam students will be assessed by their ability to apply their knowledge and skills to unseen information/resources and with reference to fieldwork. The first part of the paper will be based on a variety of resources relating to topics from Unit 1. The second part relates specifically to students’ own experience of fieldwork and investigative research skills.
