You will need to have an interest in practical and theoretical approaches to written and spoken English and be systematic and analytical. A key part of the AS year is the study of language structures, word choices and grammar. In the first year of this course you will learn to see how language can be categorised according to the way it is spoken or written as well as who it is for and why, and you will also create and analyse texts of your own. In addition, you will study how our cultural values influence language according to gender, power and technology. In the second year you will learn about how children learn to speak, read and write and study historical changes since 1700 to the present day. You will also have the opportunity to develop a topic of particular interest in depth as a language investigation study for the coursework unit, coupled with an informative media text.
