You will be interested in the choreography of dance and will have a background of dancing yourself (e.g. in ballet, contemporary, jazz, tap or modern) and want to study dance in depth. Students progress to a wide range of degrees in the creative and performing arts and are often active in local dance. You will study to gain an understanding of the dancer as a performer and the significance of dance, as well as the process of choreography. There are options to study a particular style of dance and you will learn to gain an appreciation of the content and context of a set work. You will learn by gaining experience of performing, choreographing and analysing dance. You will compose and perform solo as well as group work and will be encouraged to take every opportunity to see live professional dance. You will keep a choreographic diary recording and analysing the choreographic process. To study dance at this level a grade C or better in GCSE English is required. GCSE dance at grade C or better is an advantage, but is not essential; however some formal experience in dance is required. Students often study dance alongside other creative or performing arts subjects such as theatre studies, music or art.
