Biology is a fascinating subject. It seeks to describe and explain the fundamental features of living organisms and their relationship to the environment. This endeavour takes in its sweep an appreciation of the biochemical basis of life, cellular organisation, evolution, physiology and the complexity of ecological interactions. Both the Standard and Higher Level programmes reflect this exciting breadth of knowledge and understanding, with experimental skills and the social and historical aspects of Biology providing the context for greater depth of understanding. At Higher Level students study some aspects in much greater depth, or also study topics which are not included in the Standard core components. At both levels we study two Option topics as well, focusing on mammalian physiology. A range of practical skills are developed throughout the course including microscopy, dissection of some plant and animal tissues, use of computer simulations for modelling, basic laboratory skills, Ecology field work, and a broad variety of basic laboratory techniques. We also intend to offer the students the opportunity to participate in a residential field trip to further develop their skills in Ecology.
