The Art course encourages a broad approach, allowing students to develop a sound grounding in a number of areas whilst still exploring the subject in depth. This course builds on the knowledge, skills and understanding acquired by candidates taking Art at GCSE level. Candidates with a good GCSE pass rate will have developed sufficient understanding and skill for their programme of study to be rewarding and enjoyable in its own right. The course forms the ideal basis for further study at Foundation and Degree level, and many students go on to careers in interior and industrial design, architecture, fashion, photography and computer animated design. Students at AS explore a range of ideas, skills and materials to develop their own visual explorations on the theme of the Human Body. Particular focus is given to drawing, contextual analysis and critical reflection. The course consists of Component 1 (a coursework unit worth 50%) and Component 2 (an exam unit worth 50%). Students who complete the A Level develop their initial ideas through refinement and experimentation as well as producing Personal Study (an essay) to support and develop their practical outcomes (worth 12% of the overall grade). The A Level is composed of two components as in AS Level but all work is assessed at the higher level and is weighted in favour of Component 1 (worth 60%). Assessment is frequent and rigorous so as to identify areas for development and provide information to design individualised support for pupils beyond the lesson.
