Context The Mathematics department at St John's Catholic Comprehensive School offers students the option to Study 'Further Mathematics. This is designed for the most able and those wishing to pursue Maths at the highest level. Further Maths is equivalent to 1st Year degree level Maths. It builds upon Maths AS A level and takes the subject deeper and wider. The courses on offer include Further Pure (FP) Maths, Core Maths, Mechanics, Statistics and Decision Maths. Essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of the subject and how they relate to each other. A deep appreciation of the skills, knowledge and understanding of Mathematical methods. Competence and confidence in a variety of practical, mathematical and problem solving skills. What you will study The specification is divided into topics, each covering different key concepts of Maths: FP1 Matrices, Proof, Complex/Imaginary Numbers, Geometry, Number theory. FP2 Polar Coordinates, Complex Numbers, Differential equations & Algebra. Statistics 3 Probability, Sampling, Contingency Tables, Goodness of Fit. Decision 2 Matchings, Game Theory, Dynamic programming. Mechanics 2 Collisions, Centre of Mass, Statics of a rigid body. Mathematics brings a lot of scientific theory and thinking together, and a good AS/A-Level grade in the subject demonstrates that a student can apply themselves in analytical thinking, practical skills and scientific writing; all of these qualities are highly prized in today's competitive job market.
