Charles Dickens lived through most of the 19th century and his novels offer insights into life in England during a period of rapid change and social uncertainty. Dickens' own fear of poverty, and the traumatic experiences of factory work and his father's imprisonment coloured the writer's works, providing a genuine understanding of the desperate plight of the characters he portrays.
