History - The Turbulent World of Robin Hood and Prince John

Through examination and discussion of primary sources and modern historical analysis, we will consider the possible identity of the 'real' Robin Hood and consider the questions of civil disobedience and social unrest during the rule of Prince - later, King - John. We will also consider the personality of John, drawing on contemporary and near-contemporary sources such as Richard of Devizes and Matthew Paris, as well as later representations (such as that of Shakespeare) in order to evaluate the significance of the King's character upon the stability of the realm that generated Magna Carta., By the end of this course, you should be able to , • Identify and discuss the possible identity of the genuine 'Robin Hood' , • Describe the society that gave rise to the legend of the 'hooded man', • Discuss the reasons for the creation of Magna Carta, • Assess the role of folklore in our national history, This course will suit anyone interested in the history of London or the Tudor period.
