Clothesmaking - Improvers

This course is ideal for those who have some clothesmaking experience and who would like to try a more challenging project. You need to be confident in using a sewing machine to perform basic stitches to attend this course. The Spring Term offers you a step by step guide to sewing a garment in a fluid, sheer or silky fabric, which will introduce you to new skills and techniques. You may choose to sew a garment of your choice if you are more experienced. Please contact the tutor if you would like to discuss your project before booking the course. The first week will be spent making a technical sample and discussing appropriate fabric and pattern choices for your garment., , This 10 week course focuses on:, • using a pattern to make a garment that fits, • sewing slippery and sheer fabrics, • precision shaping for cuffs and collars, • cutting and sewing your own bias binding, • button holes, • French seams, , , This class is ideal for absolute beginners or those who need some extra confidence to restart using the machine, as well as those who have completed term 1 and or term 2 of the Beginners course.

Entry requirements

A folder or document wallet is useful to keep handouts. A basic sewing kit. You may want to bring some paper to take notes during demonstrations. Scrap fabric pieces at least 50cm square to use for practise technique samples. These could be cut from an old sheet or garment. You will need to provide your own fabric and thread to make the garment, however, we advise you to complete the first week before purchasing any patterns or fabric., , Sewing Machines: Sewing machines are provided. If you wish to use your own sewing machine in the class, please bring a copy of the manual and ensure it has been recently serviced.
