This Pottery course at the Tunbridge Wells centre will guide you through the whole process of making objects in clay through demonstrations of hand-building, throwing and glazing techniques. You will learn slabbing, pinching, coiling and basic throwing skills on the potters' wheel. There will be an opportunity for you to achieve different decorative effects through personalised projects. You will be shown how glazes are made and the various effects that can be made using them. You will be expected to do some research towards your projects at home. This could be collecting images or drawing out your ideas., By the end of the course you will be able to:, Use moulds to create shape and roll out slabs using accurate measurements for construction , Understand and demonstrate the different types of clay and firing temperatures you could use, Design and develop a type of embellishment for your pot, Select the appropriate tools to use for the relevant building technique, and be aware of and work to relevant Health and Safety guidelines.,

Entry requirements

Please bring an apron or overall to the lessons as clay tends to be a messy subject. If you have any pottery tools bring them to the first session but do not buy any equipment until you have spoken with the tutor. A notebook, pen and pencil will be useful for taking notes related to your object making. Clay, glazes and firing are costed by weight and the size of the item you create.
