Studying French at A-Level will be an asset to you for any University course whether the language is studied at degree level or whether you choose French as an additional subject. It is also seen very positively by employers. The A-level course will help you to develop your existing language skills to a higher level of competence. As well as studying the language in depth you will also study wider social issues affecting that country and works of literature or films in the target language. Reading You will be able to understand and extract information from written passages in the target language taken from authentic sources, such as magazines and newspaper reports or books. Listening You will be able to understand contemporary spoken language and answer questions on what you have heard. The passages will be taken from a range of sources such as news reports, interviews and discussions. Speaking and Writing You will learn how to take part in discussions and write essays in the target language. You will learn all the appropriate grammar, vocabulary and key phrases to help you: Why study French at A-Level? - To give you confidence and competence in practical communication skills for study, possibly in the work environment or to enable you to make more of your leisure experience in the foreign country. - To give you a deeper understanding of the inhabitants of the country whose language you are studying, and to give you some understanding of its contemporary society and social issues. - To give you a valuable and highly regarded qualification either for university entrance or for the work place. Who is the course for? Students who want to do a degree course in languages, or those who wish to pursue a higher education course in another subject, but choose French option alongside it. Having French at A-Level will improve your employability, in particular with companies which have international branches.
