The course has been designed to develop a critical awareness of the nature of politics and the relationship between political ideas, institutions and processes. Students acquire knowledge of the political system of the UK and other political systems and engage with contemporary political issues. Politics demands academic debate, discussion and argument. The focus is power and action. Knowledge of such concepts will prevent dictatorship in the UK. Politics forms an excellent basis for the following degrees: political science, international relations, law, history, European studies, sociology, business studies, philosophy, economics and languages. The subject also leads to a variety of careers: journalism, the legal profession, banking, commerce, employment with multinational corporations, teaching/lecturing, the diplomatic corps, the civil service, the military, careers within the European Union, United Nations or other international organisations and, of course, professional politics itself.
