UPDATED 20160922 17:59:03

This course would suit anyone who has an interest in looking at and talking about art as well as getting started with drawing and painting. No previous experience is required Practical work - you will explore the basics of drawing with pencil to create line drawings with some shading to illustrate volume. Then you will use paint (gouache or acrylic), exploring brush handling and dilution of pigment. Finally, you will create a simple tonal painting that shows your new knowledge of brush handling. Art appreciation - we will look at art in the gallery and on screen in the classroom discussing how artists can learn from past art, some history behind the artworks and why artists worked in various styles. Through group discussion, short talks, demonstration and one-to-one tutoring you will discuss art, undertake exercises and create a portfolio of art experiments and a finished artwork with accompanying reflective written notes. Your portfolio of work will be shown to your tutor who will advise you on progress and provide verbal and written feedback. None You can progress onto other arts courses in a choice of subjects. Your tutor will be able to advise. For drawing you will require a 2b pencil, erasure, and pencil sharpener plus drawing paper. For painting you will require a set of gouache or acrylic paints, a flat painting palette, water pot, a pointed nylon paint brush and a roll of masking tape. You will need the drawing materials for the first class. You may wish to be shown and talk through the paintig kit required before you purchase painting materials.
