The UK is in pole position in the super-fast, technology-driven world of motorsport. It has a wealth of motorsport companies whose precision engineering and advanced technology skills are increasingly in demand by race teams, manufacturers and automotive industries. Just considering Formula One alone, Red Bull, Lotus, Mercedes, Williams, Caterham, Marussia and McLaren are all located in the UK in an area nicknamed "Motorsport Valley". This area is a cluster of high-performance engineering firms concentrated in an area of the Midlands and outer south east that has enjoyed sustained growth since 2009. Anyone who has a passion for an area of Motorsport, whether this is WRC,, MotoGP, Formula One or one of the hundreds of other forms, and wish to pursue this passion into a career, this course is for you. Your course includes mandatory general units on all aspects of car maintenance and repair, such as Engines, Suspension, Brakes and Transmission, as well as a fabrication project. While completing these units you will work on regular road cars to build the fundamental underpinning knowledge required to become a mechanic. You will then study specialised Motorsport units, which include Health and Safety in the Motorsport Environment, Knowledge of Motorsport Event Regulations and Inspecting a Motorsport Vehicle During Competition. You will also have the opportunity to work on some of the college's motorsport vehicles, which can include go-karts, a KIT car, a motorbike and a track car. This work is project based and will vary throughout the year. There will be opportunities to visit Motorsport events and shows to gain an understanding of the industry and potentially meet vital contacts for your future career. The course includes a mix of practical lessons in the workshop and theory lessons in the classroom. You will be assessed via written assignments, practical observations and online exams.
