The City & Guilds Level 2 Certificate in Fashion (7160 - 12) will cover the following units: Unit 201 – Developing design ideas You will begin by creating a colour wheel and learning how to mix colours to create secondary and tertiary colours. Following this you will experiment with a range of wet media – paints, inks etc to create samples of mark making, actual and implied textures, using overlays and taking these ideas through to garment designs. Unit 202 – Sampling fashion techniques You will create a folder of samples of a range of sewing techniques – this will cover a range of seams, control of fullness and shaping (darts, tucks, gathering, pleats), attaching buttons and creating a range of different buttonholes, inserting a range of different zips, waist and neckline finishing including different types of collars, inserting sleeves, attaching different types of cuffs, attaching pockets and stitching a range of hems. A choice of either Unit 204 – Design and make a blouse or shirt Or Unit 208 – Design and make a dress A choice of either Unit 205 – Design and make a fitted lined skirt Or Unit 206 – Design and make a pair of fitted unlined trousers Or depending on your level of skill you will also be able to choose Unit 207 – Design and make a lined jacket Units 204, 205, 206, 207 and 208 will provide you with practical skills and knowledge needed to make a garment. You will design your own garment and adapt a commercial pattern to create your own design. For these units your folio will be looked at in 3 parts: • AT1) Your research and designs (pass/fail) • AT2a) Planning to make each garment– selecting pattern & fabric and sampling of techniques (pass / merit / distinction) • AT2b) Making the garments – cutting out, constructing, finishing and presenting (pass / merit / distinction) AT2b carries the most weight for grading – you must produce a very well constructed garment in order to achieve a distinction overall.
