UPDATED 20160725 10:23:24

Our ESOL classes are for you if English is not your first language. If you are settling or living in the UK we have courses for learners of all abilities. These courses will help you to read, write, speak and understand English to help you in everyday life; for example to help your children, communicate with others or to improve your skills for work. If you want to improve your English to get a job we can help you. Our ESOL courses look at topics related to living and working in Britain. You will work on improving your speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, spelling and punctuation skills for everyday use in life and work. You will work on improving your reading skills so that by the end of the course you are able to read a variety of everyday texts for different purposes, accurately and fluently. On this course you will learn how to: • Recognise how different language and presentation features are used for different purposes, e.g. to describe, persuade, instruct, explain, narrate. • Identify the main points and events in continuous texts that describe, explain, narrate and persuade. • Skim, scan and read in detail to identify the main points or main events and key details in longer continuous texts • Recognise bias and inferred meaning and distinguish between facts and opinions • Use organisational features such as table of contents, index, or menus to find information in texts or reference materials e.g. to look up synonyms or atonyms. • Further develop your understanding of English grammar ( e.g. by using a wider range of tenses) and punctuation to help you read and understand texts, including longer and more complex texts • Further develop your understanding of English spelling structures, rules and strategies, e.g. borrowed words, root words, prefixes and suffixes, to help you work out unfamiliar vocabulary in reading • Read and understand forms for personal and professional purposes
