Digital Media Production: Photography Foundation Degree

Whether you intend to work in the commercial photographic industry or become a practicing artist working with lens based media, a sound technical background is fundamental. COURSE CONTENT Through live practical projects this course will develop your technical and creative skills, introducing you to new materials, techniques and processes and encouraging your development of visual language and exploration of contexts and concepts. You will be taught how to research and develop ideas, presenting them visually and verbally and your business and professional skills will be extended. As the course progresses you will be encouraged to work with increasing independence eventually negotiating a personal direction and exploring subjects in which you have a personal interest EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES This award places great emphasis on employability and preparing students for careers in the creative and cultural industries. Students might go on to pursue careers as freelance professional practitioners or in a variety of employment settings. This course prepares students for work within the photographic and design industry, for example, advertising, fashion or editorial; often in a self employed capacity. Successful students wishing to progress to an Honours Degree may apply to take the second or final year of one of the BAs in Entrepreneurship for the Creative and Cultural Industries at Staffordshire University or an appropriate degree at any other university in the UK. WHERE NEXT Foundation Degrees are a qualification in their own right, but after completing a Foundation Degree you can go on to study for an Honours Degree. Stafford College has well established links with Staffordshire University who offer direct progression onto relevant Honours Degree courses. However, the Credit Accumulation and Transfer Scheme (CATS) means that your qualification will be formally accepted in most UK universities so you can apply to continue your studies anywhere in the UK.

Your Reflective Learning Journal will be used to show how you are progressing throughout your time on the course, so it is an important part of the assessment process. The assessment strategy is designed to provide a means of both developing and evaluating practice and performance. It makes use of appropriate, useful tasks and activities that are academically rigorous. These tasks include; port-folio, case studies, presentations and written commentaries and evaluations. The assessment strategy employs a variety of formats to suit different learning styles and to accommodate your varied work-based situations. The aim is to enhance personal and professional development whilst also providing means of evaluating performance. Assessments within a module are designed to match learning outcomes of the module, and the overall pattern of assessment across the programme matches the learning outcomes of the Foundation Degree: Digital Media Production and Photography. Tutors and mentors will work with you to ensure that work-based assessment is appropriate to your situation. Great emphasis is placed on the formative nature of assessment, so that you see assessment as an ongoing process of reflection on your performance.
