This course offers an alternative to A-Level Sciences. It is a vocational qualification that focuses on applied science and reflects aspects of employment within science organisations or organisations that use science. At the end of year 1, you will have achieved an equivalent to 3 AS-levels, and you can then progress onto the second year, where you will choose to follow either the Forensic or Medical route and achieve an equivalent to 3 A-levels. The Medical route provides students with the opportunity to acquire knowledge and understanding as well as technical and employability skills within the medical sector, and is particularly suited to those students with an interest in Biological and Medical science. Course Content Students will complete 18 wide-ranging modules over two years of study: 9 units will be taken in the first year, and 9 in the second year. Each unit is graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction and an accumulative course grade is awarded at completion. The course is comprised from a number of different areas of Science. Generic units to be studied are: 1. Fundamentals of Science 2. Working in the Science Industry 3. Scientific Investigation 4. Scientific Practical Techniques 5. Perceptions of Science 6. Application of Number for Technicians/Statistics for Science Technicians 7. Biochemical Techniques 8. Genetics and Genetic Engineering 9. Practical Chemical Analysis 10. Chemical Laboratory Techniques 11. Using Science in the Workplace Medical route 1. Biomedical Science Techniques 2. Physiological Measurements 3. Disease and Infection 4. Clinical Psychology 5. Microbiological Techniques
