The Photography course enables students to gain an extensive understanding of the medium of photography, whilst allowing them to develop sophisticated and varied skills in the subject's technical capabilities. This course continues to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding acquired by candidates taking Art or Technology at GCSE level and will further enhance their visual language skills. Those with a good GCSE pass rate will have the required foundation to ensure their progression on this course will be both rewarding and ultimately enjoyable. The course forms the ideal basis for further study at Foundation and Degree level, and many students go on to careers in media, photography, film and communication, and digital design. Students at AS explore a vast scope of reference material, skills and materials and will acquire an in-depth understanding of how to fully control their own digital camera (DSLR). They will develop their own visual explorations within the themes of the Portraiture, Landscape and Documentary photography. Particular focus is given to position of photography as an art form through sustained contextual and practical research. The course consists of Component 1 (coursework worth 50%) and Component 2 (examination worth 50%). Students who complete the full A Level will develop their initial ideas through refinement and sustained experimentation, and will produce an additional Personal Study in the form of a written essay to support and develop their practical outcomes (worth 12% of the overall grade). The A-level is composed of two components, similar to the AS Level, however all work is assessed at the higher level and is weighted in favour of Component 1 (worth 60%). Assessment is frequent and rigorous in order to ensure students are maintaining the greater level of effort and independent learning required at A-level.
