UPDATED 20160623 10:31:09

The BSc Hons Psychology and Criminology brings together several areas; psychology, criminology, sociology and law, in order to explore human and criminal behaviour within the context of society and the legal system. The degree aims to develop knowledge and understanding of the core schools of criminological thought, their history, contemporary relevance and application. Additionally, this degree aims to develop in-depth knowledge and understanding of the major perspectives within psychology, especially developmental psychology, cognitive psychology, abnormal psychology and social psychology. This theoretical knowledge will be applied to a range of criminological and psychological contexts. The overall approach of the degree is to develop critical appreciation of the relationship between the individual and social aspects of crime and victimisation. The course brings together psychology, law, criminology and sociology to explore issues of criminal behaviour, the social and legal context of such behaviour and how society relates to crime. Whilst the course will utilise a variety of teaching and learning techniques, the emphasis is upon the practical application of theory coupled with the development of knowledge, skills and evaluative analysis, all of which will be attractive to employers in the public and private sectors. Is this the right course for me? You need to meet the entry requirements of the course. It would be beneficial if you have previous subject knowledge of psychology and sociology, but it is not essential. You need an interest in the subject and a desire to make a positive contribution, as well as the ability to be an independent learner due to the intensive pace of the course.
