The first year of this course is common to electrical/electronic and mechanical engineering and is designed to give you an understanding of both disciplines of engineering. You will learn about electrical/electronic, manufacturing and mechanical engineering as well as the theory behind design work. After you have completed the first year you will decide which course to take in the second year depending on your talents, strengths and, of course, your preference.

All units are assessed and graded and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded. At the end of the first year you will have your progress reviewed to ascertain your suitability for completing the extended diploma course of your choice or alternately being transferred to the Edexcel BTEC diploma in engineering course. The diploma is at the same advanced level and will be the vocational equivalent of two A levels instead of three for the extended diploma.
