This qualification reflects aspects of employment within science organisations. The course covers units from all three science disciplines within the mandatory units, whilst allowing for a more specialist route when choosing from the optional units. You will have the opportunity to acquire technical and employability skills, as well as knowledge and understanding of science. To achieve this award you must achieve 60 credits. This consists of 3 mandatory units (30 credits) plus optional units that make up the remaining 30 credits. The Mandatory units are: • unit 1 - Fundamentals of Science • unit 2 - Working in the Science Industry • unit 4 - Scientific Practical Techniques The Optional units include: • Unit 11 - Physiology of Human Body Systems • Unit 22 - Chemical Laboratory Techniques • Unit 18- Genetics and Genetic Engineering * There are 34 optional units to choose from so choices may vary from those stated During year 12 you will study Unit 1, unit 4 and unit 11. Unit 1 - by the end of this unit you should be able to use the necessary skills to measure quantities for chemical reactions. Be able to use the correct equipment to identify the structures and functions in different types of cells. Be able to investigate different types of energy and their transfers. Be able to communicate scientific information. Unit 4 - by the end of this unit you should be able to use analytical techniques. Be able to use scientific techniques to separate and assess the purity of substances and be able to use instruments/sensors for scientific investigation. Unit 11 - during this unit you will investigate some of the organ systems of the human body and how they work together. Body systems you will study include: circulatory, respiratory, digestive and lymphatic.
