Follow and participate in the fascinating history of papermaking from East to West in this full term class with two tutors who will guide you through the contrasting, but complementary traditions. Students will learn how using local plants and resources to take this ancient craft in different directions. You will learn how long-fibred, eastern plant pulps, beaten by hand, form delicate films of paper that can be pigmented and layered with shorter fibred pulps to stunning effect. Cotton and linen rag, pulped in the Hollander beater in the western tradition, will inspire exciting experiments in pulp painting, poured sheets and embossing. Students will also have the opportunity to combine both traditions in personal projects, and will come away with a rainbow of colours and textures for future inspiration. Full demonstrations and class discussions will support everyone on this journey of discovery.
