UPDATED 20160421 08:24:32

"Year 1 Law Making & The Legal System This involves students in an exploration of law-making through the institutions which create legislation i.e. the EU, Parliament & delegated legislation. We also evaluate the role of the judges in making law in this country through the Doctrine of Precedent & how important the court hierarchy is in this procedure. Students will also examine the role of the people within the legal system, the legal profession.. The Concept of Liability Here the students will look at the underlying principles of Criminal Liability - the Actus Reus (the physical act of committing a crime) and the Mens Rea (the guilty mind). They will study the non-fatal offences of assault, battery, ABH & GBH. We look at the outline of the criminal courts & their appeal procedures including classification of offences. There is a detailed look at the sentencing powers of the magistrates & the judiciary. This will all be helped by courts & prison visits. Year 2 Offences Against the Person Here we initially take a look at how criminal liability is established & how someone can actually be 'guilty' of a criminal offence. We take an in-depth look at homicide, assault, battery, ABH & GBH Offences Against Property Here we look at the offences against property how theft & burglary, blackmail, fraud and criminal damage are committed together with the defences for all the above offences including, consent, self defence, insanity & intoxication. Students will also study the distinction between law & morals, the meaning of 'justice' and the theories behind it. Also the extent to which judges are able to create law through the system of precedent & statutory interpretation, together with a consideration of the balance between the roles of Parliament & the judiciary."
