Patchwork and Appliqué

This course will introduce students to the pleasures of patchwork and appliqué. The six week course will equip students with the basic skills to make colourful quilts, throws and other decorative items, using traditional and contemporary designs. Most of the practical work will be sewing machine based, so you will be able to learn (if you are a beginner), practise and develop your machine sewing skills, as well as doing some hand sewing., , By the end of the course students should:, , - be able to recognise one or more traditional or contemporary patchwork designs, - have made one or more patchwork and/or appliqué items using the appropriate skills, - be able to use one or more designs for patchwork and appliqué, - be able to use the sewing machine for patchwork and/or appliqué work, - work to the relevant health and safety guidelines, , There is no 'homework' for this course, but you will get the most out of it if you are able to continue working on your projects in your own time., , There is no qualification for this course., , , , There is limited parking on site, but there is a public car park nearby and on-street parking. This course is for beginners who would like to learn the basic skills to make a patchwork and appliqué items.,

Entry requirements

Please do not buy anything especially for this course before checking with the Canterbury Centre, about a week before the start, on 03000 412222, that is it going ahead. You will need to supply your own materials and equipment for this course. If possible, you will need to bring your sewing machine, if you have one already; there are machines you can use at the Centre, but it is best that you get used to using your own machine. Fabric and tools will be discussed during the first session., , Students will need to bring the following to the first session: scissors; both fabric and paper scissors, ruler, pen, pencil, basic sewing kit and scraps of fabric for the first piece oif work; firm dress weight cotton is best, in a variety of patterns.
