A LEVEL ENGLISH LANGUAGE In this course you will study the English language in a completely new light. You will look at how language is used by different people in a variety of situations and texts. English language is one of the most challenging, but also one of the most fascinating subjects on offer to you and it is well-respected by universities and employers alike. In year 12 we study: • language production and variation through different forms and textual analysis • language diversity: social groups, occupation, gender, religion and ethnicity. • creative writing In year 13 we study: • how the English language has changed since 1600 and is changing today; • an individual investigation into language • language development of children • The students will be given an article about current language issues to read every week for a class discussion • A varied range of fiction/non-fiction texts will be encountered and critical and attentive listening skills will be required. • The coursework in Y12 offers students a chance to develop their creative writing skills • The coursework in Y13 is a chance for a truly independent project which allows students to investigate an area of language which interests them Assessment is by written examination and coursework. 20% coursework and 80% written examination. Students must have a minimum GCSE grade B in English. • English language provides a useful stepping stone to many careers including teaching, business, law and journalism. Subject leader: H Burton
