The Music A Level is divided into the three areas of Performance, Composition ad Listening. You will take time to develop performance skills in your chosen instrument and apply this in a short recital in front of an audience. You will be marked on the accuracy of what you play and your expression. You should be at least a grade 5 standard on your chosen instrument. The second area is Composition. In this side of the course you will learn techniques of harmony and melody and write two pieces of music one of which will be a technical study. In the listening part of the course you will study a wide range of music from a wide range of genres and eras -including 12 set works. In the exam you will be played different musical extracts and be asked to write about what you hear. You will also be expected to be able to dictate a piece of music played to you. Finally you will be required to write two essays in the exam, one based on an unfamiliar piece of music and one on pieces you have studied. This course can lead to further education in Music or Music technology at degree level and into careers such as Music Therapy, Arts Management, Music Teaching, Performing and Composing. It is a rigorous academic and creative subject and one which students normally enjoy.
