This qualification requires the study of eight literary texts plus unseen poetry. The course approaches the study of literature by encouraging students to read widely and independently. Students will study set texts from a wide variety of historical periods, as well as exploring their own literary interests by choosing their own texts for their coursework. They will study poetry, prose and drama, learning to engage critically and creatively across a range of genres and periods; develop and apply your knowledge of literary analysis and evaluation; explore the significance and influence of the contexts in which literary texts are written and received; and evaluate the value of different interpretations of texts. Lessons will involve a wide variety of approaches. Students will be expected to pre-read texts, contribute ideas in discussions, prepare group and individual presentations, and work independently on follow-up work. A love of reading is essential.
