The art and design course covers areas such as: Painting, Drawing, Print making and Photography. The course is essentially practical and covers the following components: Unit 1: (Year 12) You will complete a portfolio of work that will demonstrate the breadth and depth of the course of study. It will include at least one extended collection of work based on an idea, theme, issue or concept. Critical/contextual work which will include written materials such as reflections and evaluations, annotations and historical background material. This will take the form of a sketchbook. Unit 2: (Year 12) You will complete an externally set assignment, the emphasis of this unit will be the development of ideas. You will have a preparatory period leading up to a timed and unaided five hour exam. Unit 3: (Year 13) This is a practical unit with written elements in which you are expected to develop a personal investigation based on an idea, issue, concept or theme leading to a finished piece or pieces. The practical elements should be linked with some aspect of contemporary or past practice of artists. The quality of written communication is an important aspect of this unit. Written material should be no less than one thousand words and no more than three thousand words. This could take the form of a personal study a journal or an evaluation and reflection on your work and that of others. Unit 4: (Year 13) You will complete an externally set assignment. You will have a preparatory period leading up to a timed and unaided fifteen hour exam. You will produce a clearly defined selection of work that makes up a whole, leading to a finished piece or pieces.
