English Literature is a course designed for those who love to debate ideas, for this is the subject matter of the texts you will read, study, discuss and respond to. For the most part, your teachers will expect you to read outside the classroom and to bring ideas with you to lessons. At A Level you are asked to look at your texts in the contexts of the writers themselves; their philosophical, religious or political views; how their work has been interpreted by different audiences; their importance to other writers, to the literary establishment or to you. You will be expected to make your own assumptions about texts and to bring new and fresh ideas to lessons.
