Leatherwork How will this course help me? You will learn traditional leatherworking techniques to make your own leather items such as a belt and a bag. Who is the course for? Anyone who wants to learn the basic skills needed to work with leather. Everyone is welcome and no previous knowledge is assumed. What can I expect to learn? You will learn about: Different types of leather and their uses Specialist leatherwork tools and how to use them Cutting, edging and finishing leather How to stitch leather with 2 needles and thread – the saddler’s stitch Pattern design and cutting Marking out leather Dyeing and staining Lacing. You will apply these skills to make your own bridle leather belt and then you may wish to go on to design your own bag or make one to standard pattern. How will I learn? There will be many demonstrations, a chance to ask questions and to practise skills at your own pace. There are no exams or formal assessments. If you think you may need extra help with your learning, please ask your tutor or the Centre staff. We will try to help you. How will I know how well I am doing? The tutor will help you to recognise how well you are doing and what you need to do to improve. This may include developing your own learning plan. What will I need to provide? You should wear an apron or old clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. Will there be any other costs? You may be provided with a reading list to support your learning. Most of the costs of this course, including tools and materials to make a belt, are covered in the advertised course fee. However if you wish to make a bag or similar item there will be a further charge for the leather. The charge will depend on what you wish to make. Your tutor will advise.
