Academic students with an interest in design, a flare for innovation and a passion for problem solving generally find Product Design both stimulating and enjoyable. A level Product Design is the perfect course for anyone with an interest in design and the design process. Students are given the opportunity to take responsibility for their own learning through covering a range of design briefs, working with various materials such as woods, metals and plastics, as well as smart and modern materials to prepare students for the ever-changing technological developments in industry. In Year 12, the Controlled Assessment Unit is broken down into 2 Design and Make projects: The two projects combine to make 50% of the AS (25% of the overall A Level) and follow a similar, but more in-depth format to that of GCSE. Unit 2 is a written exam sat in June with a primary focus of Materials and Components which also accounts for 50% of the AS (25% of the final A Level grade). Year 13 allows students to choose and create their own design brief, giving them freedom to direct their studies towards a specific interest. This also accounts for 25% of the overall grade. The Unit 4 written exam again is sat in June and focuses on Design and Manufacturing processes looking for a much deeper understanding of design and is worth the final 25% of the overall A Level.
