Physics is a challenging subject and the most fundamental of all the sciences. It deals with questions such as what matter is made of and how black holes are formed. Physics also provides the understanding of phenomena and the modelling of processes which allow the design and development of vehicles, bridges, computers, etc. Technological advances depend crucially on discoveries made by physicists. The course is designed to cover the needs of future specialists, engineers and those who require physics for other careers. It involves considerable thinking skills and problem solving and the emphasis is on the understanding of principles. In AS physics students study forces and motion, deformation of solids, electricity and fundamental particles, wave properties and quantum physics. The A2 course includes more detailed study of motion and interactions between moving objects, including circular motion and oscillations, the effects of gravitational, electric and magnetic fields, thermal physics, nuclear physics and historical turning points in physics e.g. relativity. Changes to the A-level Physics specification for first teaching in September 2015 are primarily aimed at improving investigation and laboratory skills. The course content will therefore be further assessed with more practical work and students will benefit from greater hands on experience of lab equipment and techniques.
