This is a new syllabus, and covers areas for both AS and A Level. The AS Level covers two units, examined in 2017, which will then be examined again, in more depth, in 2018. Students will study, for the first unit, a modern play, with Tennessee Williams’ classic melodrama, A Streetcar Named Desire being the current option. In the same paper, students will answer a question on Poems of the Decade, an enthralling anthology of modern poetry. The second unit, Prose Study, explores different themes, such as The Supernatural and Science and Society, where science fiction masterpieces such as Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale are featured. In the full A Level, AS texts are revisited, with the addition of a Shakespeare classic, such as Othello or Antony and Cleopatra, and a genre of older poetry; Metaphysical and Romantic Poetry are current favourites. Coursework in the A Level compares two texts connected by author, theme, or period, and students can also have an input into a selection of books for this option. The syllabus is exciting and refreshing, and should present an absorbing challenge to students embarking on it in 2017. It is important to note that the AS is now a separate, discrete qualification from the A Level, and does not count towards it.
