Geography A Level

UPDATED 20161014 08:48:58

Geography is concerned with understanding the key relationship between people and the natural environment. Studying the subject is therefore important as well as being enjoyable. The subject content is stimulating and broad, covering a range of physical and human geographical themes, from tectonic hazards to migration. Geography is unique in the way it bridges the Humanities and Sciences in terms of its subject content, as well as the variety of transferable skills that it develops. The range of content and skills that are taught in Geography will support your learning in a wide range of other A Level subjects. Geography opens up students to a wide range of careers, including scientific research, business management and urban planning. Geography graduates have amongst the highest employment rates out of all subjects once they have finished university. Only 5.8% of Geography graduates still seek employment six months after graduation, compared with a national average of 7.3%. The Russell Group of universities classify Geography as a facilitating subject i.e. one that is recommended to be taken in preparation for Higher Education. The Geography department at Maidstone Grammar School is a very well-resourced department. Teaching of A Level in the department has consistently been graded as ‘outstanding’, and the department’s results are very competitive. Indeed, results show that students typically do better in Geography when compared with their other subjects. A Level course to be followed: • AQA Geography examination board – see: http://www.aqa.org.uk/subjects/geography/as-and-a-level/geography-7037.
