AS and A Level Chemistry

The course provides a challenging and interesting introduction to the discipline of chemistry at an advanced level. This course is suited to students who wish to pursue a career in medicine, the pharmaceutical industry, environmental areas, or the chemical industries. It also develops the skills of analysis and enquiry, which are invaluable for a wide range of careers. Year 1 covers: Foundation chemistry: atomic structure, amount of substance, bonding, periodicity, and alkanes Chemistry in action: kinetics, equilibria, redox reactions, the halogens, extraction of metals, haloalkanes, and alkenes Investigative and Practical Skills: assessed coursework on making observations and measurements, as well as analysing and evaluating results Year 2 covers: Kinetics, equilibria, and organic chemistry: acids and bases, carbonyl group, aromatics, amines, amino acids, polymers, and organic synthesis and analysis Energetics, redox, and inorganic chemistry: periodicity of period 3 elements, thermodynamics, transition metals, and redox equilibria Investigative and practical skills: assessed coursework on making observations and measurements, as well as analysing and evaluating results You will develop key skills that are highly valued by employers, including: application of number communication IT The course is delivered using a variety of teaching and learning styles, including the Smart Board, PowerPoint, and video presentations, as well as both group and practical work.
