The four-unit specification in Media Studies encourages students to look at the world around them in a critical and analytical way. Media students will be very interested in moving images and the printed media. They will not necessarily have a GCSE in the subject but will be willing to work hard to read and make media. Visits are arranged to professional media and students are encouraged to make films and edit them. Careers in the Media are growing as the industry expands. The subject combines well with English, Visual and Performing Arts and History. It integrates theoretical and practical approaches by requiring candidates to reflect on their practical work in the examinations. Year 1 G321 - the Foundation Portfolio in which practical work is undertaken in ONE of print, video. audio or webbased media. Appropriate technical and production skills are used. The unit is internally assessed. G322 - is exam-based and deals with the textual analysis of television drama (including an extract in the exam) and media issues more generally. Year 2 G324 Advanced Portfolio in Media. Students plan and construct a more sophisticated media product and also present their associated research in an electronic format. This is internally assessed and students will be expected to show proficiency in research and planning, constrction and evaluation. G325 - Critical Perspectives in Media - draws on all of students' knowledge formed through the two-year course. It is an examination in production theories such as representation and audience and, in Section B, Comtemporary Media Issues which concern us all. These include Global Media and Media in the Online Age.
